Hannover region

Formed in 2001, the regional authority serves 1.2 million inhabitants in 21 towns and municipalities – including the state capital Hannover.

Among other things, Region Hannover is responsible for local PT and waste disposal, but also for local social welfare, vocational schools and municipal hospitals. Environment, regional planning and local recreation as well as economic and employment promotion are further areas of responsibility. Hannover Region’s budget is around 1.6 billion euros per year. One of the core goals of the regional SUMP is to reach a better utilisation of capacities and to gain additional passengers/ convert occasional passengers to regular passengers. This will be reached by enabling discounting in times of low demand and better utilisation of capacities. The goal is also to reach a higher share of digital ticket sales (today: 5%). As part of the demonstration in UPPER, different forms of billing (kilometre or zone tariff) will be tested.
