Leuven is a “student” city with 100,000 inhabitants, of which 40,000 are students.
It has Belgium’s 6th busiest train station, with around 33,932 boarding per weekday. It connects Leuven with all major Belgian cities and also directly with the international airport of Brussels. By 2035, Leuven aims to reduce the number of car trips by half. As the total transport demand is expected to further increase, given Leuven’s growing population and employment, this reduction implies a steep increase in the use of bikes (+144%) and PT (+73%). To realize the increase in the use of PT, the city wants to improve the quality of the PT services by investing in bus lanes, higher frequencies, increased transfer options, multimodal hubs, MDMS and third-payer systems, peripheral parking and park and rides. Although the city has already made substantive progress huge challenges remain and the UPPER project is an opportunity to meet those challenges and profit from the combined knowledge and experience of the different partners and pilot sites.
