Lifting the pressure that sports events place on cities is both possible and mandatory #RomaGiocaSostenibile
Sports events can put significant strain on cities and their transportation networks due to the influx of spectators and increased traffic. Encouraging the use of public transport and active mobility measures can help alleviate congestion, reduce the environmental impact of transportation, and enhance overall transportation efficiency. It’s easy to see how travel to sporting events can get in the way of families on a peaceful weekend walk; how disruptive it is to neighbourhoods’ lives; and how it unnecessarily increases stress, traffic, and pollution. Lifting the pressure that sports games place on cities is therefore both possible and mandatory
Narrowly defeated by England on March 3, this Saturday, Italy will battle against Scotland at Rome’s Olympic stadium as part of the 2024 Six Nations tournament. Promoted by Roma Servizi per la Mobilità, the body in charge of the city’s mobility services and UPPER partner, under the patronage of F.I.R, Sport e Salute, and Roma Capitale, the initiative #RomaGiocaSostenibile has been encouraging sports fans to leave their cars at home to beat CO2 emissions since 2015. The online information in Italian and English includes a map with cycling and pedestrian routes, parking for people with impaired mobility, bus, tram, and metro options as well as tips for those landing at the airport. Shared mobility operators, meanwhile, offer discounts and promotions to rugby fans.
UPPER could not find a better initiative to team up with to highlight the many benefits of promoting the project's over 80 measures to draw people to public transport and increase its uptake by over 30%. Eurocities the European network of more than 200 cities in 38 countries, representing 130 million people, will also be part of the 2024 edition.
Our common aim is to make Rome a more sustainable city, improving the quality of people’s lives through the promotion of public transport and active mobility measures. Rome is a gem and only through a sustainable transport approach can we fully appreciate it.
