Budapest wins European urban mobility award 2023

Last night our living lab Budapest was crowned with the #EuropeanMobilityWeek award 2023

EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK is the European campaign on sustainable urban mobility, organized with the political and financial support of the Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport of the European Commission.

The jury selected the City of Budapest for its ambitious car-free weekend (16 - 17 September), which counted 10,000 participants, and Car-Free Day (22 September). The Mayor of Budapest unveiled comprehensive plans on the latter for the construction of a new pedestrian area along the Danube embankment. In close cooperation with the City of Vienna, Budapest also hosted a public event to promote best practices in walking and cycling policies, as well as discussions on how to 'Save Energy' in the transport sector in partnership with the Centre for Budapest Transport (BKK).

BKK Director of Mobility Development and UPPER Project EU partner Adam Bodor had a good feeling about the award and released this mantic quote the day before the ceremony in Brussels "During Budapest Mobility Week in 2023 Budapest managed to attract a huge crowd to showcase the opportunities public transport, cycling and walking provides to make our city more livable. Opening the Danube riverbank to people (and not for cars) for the weekends and a variety of programs including the heritage tram exhibition was convenient for many people. Will the jury be convinced regarding the Urban Mobility Award? We will see it tonight, though the many efforts shown by the citizens of Budapest already won my heart!"
