ClicBus, the new experimental public transport service on demand in Rome

On-demand public transport stands at the forefront of urban mobility innovations, promising a more responsive, efficient, and environmentally friendly approach to transportation. As more cities experiment with and adopt these systems, we are likely to see a shift in the way residents navigate their urban environments. The key will be to integrate on-demand services thoughtfully with existing transit options, ensuring that all citizens have access to the essential connectivity that public transport provides.

UPPER Living Lab Rome has launched ClicBus an innovative, free, and accessible service for everyone that does not follow a predetermined route within the neighborhood or has fixed stops. Instead, it flexibly adapts to the mobility requests of users to best meet the various individual transportation needs.

The experimentation started on Sept 4 and will be active every day, including holidays, from 5.30 am to midnight. During the trial period, the effectiveness of the service, user satisfaction, and the effects on the public transport lines currently serving the neighborhood will be evaluated. The new ClicBus service will operate with 3 vehicles dedicated to the Massimina neighborhood, with a capacity of 8 seats and equipped for 1 wheelchair per vehicle for people with reduced mobility.

Two weeks after its launch encouraging initial figures were detected:

  • 1,160 rides
  • 1,987 passengers.
  • 200 passengers per day

"What's happening in Massimina should not be a one-off operation, but rather represent the future of public transport: the mini on-demand buses fit into a model made up of main lines with metro, trams, and railways, along with the feeder bus routes. For this area, it is an important initiative because it turns the Aurelia station into an intermodal transport hub," said Deputy Mayor Patanè
