May brings new e-buses in Thessaloniki
UPPER Twinning city Thessaloniki, one of the Mission cities, is taking action towards climate neutrality.
Within UPPER the city plans to decarbonise its PT system, with the National Ministry of Transport supporting Thessaloniki to bring 300 clean buses to the city by 2024. Thessaloniki has the ambition to
1) reduce the car dependency by improving its offer of on-demand and shared mobility services as a complement to PT services,
2) re-structure the public bus system, because of the operation of the new PT modes such as the metro, public maritime transport and west suburban railway, and
3) deploy flexible PT services in low-demand areas and for dedicated social groups. Thessaloniki’s SUMP envisages an increase in the daily PT trips that have at least one end within the city borders, from 32% to more than 39% by 2030.
On Monday, May 20th, the Hellenic Ministry of Transport with TheTA and OASTH launched the operation of 110 new e-buses for the city's public transport system. In the next 3 years, the city aims to have a zero-emission bus fleet for the core urban area as 250 more clean buses will be acquired.
For the first time, commented Ioannis Toskas CEO of TheTA , "Thessaloniki has entered the game of "green transition" and zero pollutants in public transport, and in a few years it will claim an equal role to that of the main European cities. Yesterday the first electric buses took to the streets of Thessaloniki, earning a first bet on pollution-free transport in a city plagued for years by negative levels of traffic and urban environment."
In this context, the 3rd JIVE Bus Roadshow arrived in Greece to showcase the future of eco-friendly transportation across Greek cities. The hydrogen Bus arrived in Thessaloniki on the 17th of May and made trial routes to provide real-world data and information. The bus was demonstrated to everyone eager to learn more about the role of hydrogen in mobility and the benefits of hydrogen as a clean energy source for transportation, promoting a greener future for all.
