The electric mobility wave reached another UPPER city.

Last September we wrote about Lisbon's significant boost to its commitment to a zero-emission fleet welcoming the arrival of 44 new fully-electric buses.

This new electric mobility wave has now reached another UPPER city, Rome.

Just before Christmas Rome, as part of the UPPER measure 5, unveiled the first 110 vehicles out of a total supply of 411 fully electric vehicles that will enter the Italian capital's fleet. An investment of over 220 million euros, of which over 208 were financed through PNRR funds and over 12 from self-financing by Atac.

The supply will be completed by April 2026. In the meantime, the new vehicles will continue to arrive next year, equipped with fire prevention systems, video surveillance, multimedia monitors, LED signs and air conditioning, and Tap&Go ticket validators. The new 18-meter electric buses have 87 seats available, 66 standing, 20 seated, and one for disabled people, and a range of about 300 km.

Sixty new fully electric buses will arrive on the streets of Rome by January 2025, and will destined for public transport in the suburbs: it is the first time that electric buses in the Capital are destined for non-central lines.

"It's exciting," said Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, "because this isn't just one of the many blocks of new buses: with these 110 electric buses and the arrival of the methane-powered ones, another piece of the program of over 1,100 that we are purchasing is closing, with 345 vehicles in 2024 and 273 in the previous period. With these new vehicles, we are lowering the average age of the fleet to 5 years and reducing emissions. They will be modern and comfortable buses that will break down less and that don't pollute. They are the greenest vehicles of all," he added, "We have the goal of reducing emissions by 66% in 2030. They have cameras instead of mirrors, and side sensors for obstacles. And a full service with Romana Diesel that guarantees assistance."

"The arrival of electric buses - commented Councilor Patanè - will allow us to take a big step forward on the road to radically renewing the Atac fleet, which will be more ecological, modern, and comfortable to the benefit of the quality and efficiency of public transport and the safety of citizens. Thanks to 411 electric buses and over 1000 new vehicles that will arrive by 2026, in Rome we will have a fleet with the lowest average age in Europe - five years compared to the average of ten in the European Union - and with advanced systems such as Tap&Go which is continuing to be a great success".
