Valencia launches Metrominuto
Project partner Ajuntament de València has introduced Metrominuto, a series of three maps that mimic metro lines specifically designed for pedestrians. This initiative features a visual campaign to promote walking throughout the city!
Metrominuto València is a schematic map that measures walking distances and times, presenting them through visual codes similar to those used in major cities' metro systems. The goal is to normalize walking culture by demonstrating that most of our daily trips can be completed in just ten to fifteen minutes on foot.
The general plan includes 88 reference points of certain urban relevance, along with the times and distances between them, as well as information about railway stations. As can be seen, the design is somewhat saturated with information, although an effort has been made to ensure adequate readability so that it meets the objectives for which it was created. This apparent saturation has led to the existence of the other plans created in this first phase and those that will be made in the second.
Although Metrominutos are typically created with straight segments, the city's layout encouraged the design team to generate two circles (or one circle and one parenthesis). The first is a graphic representation of the Turia Park and the outline of the historic center. The second circle (or parenthesis) continues the curved language in the east and west areas, recovering the rectilinear shape in the south.
The first Metrominuto was created in 2011 as part of a pedestrian mobility lab in the city of Pontevedra. The Walking Cities Network, which includes more than 90 municipalities and provinces representing around 10 million people, has adopted the initiative as an effective way to promote natural mobility in urban areas.
The Councillor for Mobility, Jesús Carbonell, emphasized during the presentation that 'Valencia is a Mediterranean and compact city, where walking should be the central axis of mobility. The objective is to promote mobility on foot, which is the most used by citizens. More than 50% of people travel on foot and it is essential to promote it, protect it through measures around infrastructure, and make the city friendly and welcoming so that people walk more”
